Chair holder for an Industrial Chair on “Vision Ageing and Action"
Position opening by Institut de la Vision and Essilor
The “Institut de la Vision” (IdV) one of the top European centers in research on vision and eye diseases, along with Essilor world leader in ophthalmic optics are creating an Industrial Chair on “Vision ageing and Action” for the next four years with a possible long-term contract extension.
IdV and Essilor already have a strong partnership after 4 years of successful collaboration on visual impairment: multi-disciplinary teams - visual neuroscientists, optometrists, optical engineers - and existing technical platforms constitute a seminal foundation for the chair.
The objective of the chair is to build fundamental knowledge to better profile and characterize the ageing of visual functions in healthy and pathological eye conditions, as it relates to action and multi-sensory integration: new tests, instruments, visual deficit patient management. In this perspective, the role of pericentral and peripheral vision (motion perception, contrast visual field, attentional visual field…) and of light management (glare, photosensitivity, time adaptation…) will be characterized in dynamic conditions by a behavioural approach: perception and action, visuo-motor strategies, multi-sensory interactions. The ultimate expectation is the development of new evaluation methods to test the performance of innovative optical and opto-electronic ophthalmic devices and the design of rehabilitation protocols thereof.
The chair will combine skills and resources of a core-team of about 10 scientists, engineers and technicians, and will complement the current expertise in visual psychophysics and clinical methodology of the IdV and its high-tech StreetLab™ test platforms including virtual-reality simulators.
The Chair Holder will establish the scientific direction and will supervise the research team.
She/he will be in charge of the interface with external partners and public institutions: University “Pierre et Marie Curie” and a funding agency. She/he will ensure the governance of the chair, the timely delivery of scientific results, the financial reporting, the technology transfer and the scientific dissemination. She/he will design and draft an original scientific program with ambitious positioning and besides will contribute to seek public funding leverage by applying French/European grant opportunities.
The candidate has a PhD in vision sciences, or equivalent, followed by a research experience of at least 10 years. Knowledge in sensory ageing, psychophysics, clinical evaluation of technical visual aids and ophthalmic devices are appreciated. Past experience in industry-academia collaborations and technology transfer are a plus. The position will require good skills in communication, teaching and management.
Applications should include a letter of motivation, a CV with a list of publications and potential reference letters; short suggested outline of research projects/programs are also welcome. Complete applications should be sent to recruitment@institut‐vision.org clearly referring the application. The ranking will be established by a selective scientific committee comprised of Educational, Institutional and Industrial scientific experts. Short‐listed candidates will be contacted for an interview and a visit of the platforms that will be held in Paris.
Final selection of the candidate after the process selection will be announced no later than the end of May with the objective of an operational chair kick-off in September this year.

.
Candidates are expected to develop research programs related to corneal (epithelial, stromal, and endothelial) stem cell biology, to apply for grants in this field, and to participate to the team development. Successful results regarding these points are required for further permanent position in the Institute. The candidate will be also evaluated for independent project management.
The research topics will include characterization of corneal stem cells, selection of stem cells from cultures of human corneal cells, in vitro expansion of stem cells, preparation of cell therapy products to be used in humans, and in vitro reconstruction of corneal equivalent.
The successful candidate will integrate the Institute of Vision for working in the cell therapy platform. He (she) will work in close collaboration with the cornea team from the Centre Hospitalier National d'Ophtalmologie des XV-XX and the Etablissement Français du Sang to bring laboratory developments to clinical application for patients suffering from severe corneal diseases requiring transplantation of stem cells and tissues.
