Ophthalmology is one of the oldest medical disciplines and a field of fascinating research that has been marked by recent exceptional progress in understanding human vision in health and disease and development of innovative therapeutic strategies for currently incurable eye diseases. Efficient collaboration and partnership between academia and industry is the key to translate laboratory discoveries into new diagnostic tools, medical devices and therapies for patients.

The Second French-Japanese Conference “Innovation in Ophthalmology” organized by the scientific department of the Embassy of France in Tokyo and the Institut de la Vision in Paris takes place during the International Society for Eye Research (ISER2016, Tokyo) and just after

the International Symposium on Retinal Degeneration Meeting (RD2016, Kyoto) in an attempt to promote French-Japanese collaboration in science and innovation. This event is part of the agenda of the France–Japan Year of Innovation that aims at gathering academia and industry experts from both countries to foster multidisciplinary and translational exchanges.
