He is leading the team ‘Neurophysiology and Optogenetic Applications in the Retina’ in the Department of Visual Information Processing. He received his PhD at Max-Planck-Institute for Medical Research Heidelberg, Department of Biomedical Optics, Germany, and worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the laboratory of Botond Roska at Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research Basel, Switzerland. Shortly after joining the Vision Institute in 2012 he received an ERC starting Grant ‘Microbial opsins for mammalian vision: Optogenetics in the retina’ to establish his new team. His laboratory investigates the function of neural networks in the retina and develops optogenetic treatment strategies to restore vision. Therefore, we are using advanced imaging and electrophysiology in combination with viral and optogenetic tools.
